How to check a resume against a job description

Updated 23 October 2026

Parse a resume in the browser, match a job ad if you paste one, and read why the score moved.

What the checker actually does

Hiring software (often called ATS) reads text out of a resume file. Fancy columns, scans, and tables can confuse that step. ToolZora’s checker extracts text from PDF or DOCX in your browser, looks for common sections, and compares skills to a job description you paste. The file is not stored on ToolZora.

You get a general ATS-style score without a job ad, and a separate job-match score when a description is present. Both are heuristics. They are not Workday, Greenhouse, or any named vendor. We do not claim 100% accuracy or that a recruiter will interview you.

How to run it honestly

Upload a text-based PDF or DOCX under 5 MB. If the page warns that the file looks scanned, believe it: the score will be weak because there is almost no text. Paste the real job post, not a slogan. Read matched and missing skills. Only add a missing skill if you truly have that experience. Keyword stuffing is worse than a lower score.

The same matching works for software and for other fields. AutoCAD, welding, or a phrase you listed under Skills can match. Java and JavaScript stay different on purpose.

What not to do

Do not invent companies, metrics, or degrees because a tool suggested a keyword. Optional AI wording, if a site owner configured it, must not invent facts either. If AI is off, you still get rule-based notes.

Questions

Will this get my resume past every ATS?

No. It estimates parseability and overlap. Vendors differ. Use it to find gaps you actually have.

Do you keep my resume?

No. Analysis runs in the browser. Do not email your resume to ToolZora unless a person has asked for it.
